As a renter, there will be times that you are faced with problems. If you owned the property, you could fix things and do things the way you wanted, but as a renter you do not have this option. You will face problems and need to know what you can do about them. Learn what can be done about common apartment problems.
The most common issue that most have is that something breaks. A good landlord comes back within a reasonable amount of time and makes sure the issue is taken care of. At times you will have a bad landlord who does not take care of the property. What you need to do is not only give a phone call about the issue but also submit a concern in writing. This can protect you. For example, you have a leaking sink it can eventually ruin the wood underneath. If you present this needed fix in writing with a date on it, it can be shown that any damages that this problem caused were because the landlord did not fix the issue versus you being negligent. This is a way of protecting yourself from loss.
If there is an issue like a pest problem and the landlord refuses to do anything and you don’t have the means to fix the issue, you do have some things that you can do. Most cities or counties have Heath and Safety departments that will cover housing codes and issues like this. Go talk to them about the issue and see what can be done to get things like pests, mold, mildew, or other potentially unsafe things cleaned up and out of your living space that you are renting.
The last thing that you can do if there are serious issues is to leave honest reviews on various apartment review sites. Let others know what the landlord’s habits are and if you are satisfied or not with the service. A landlord who does not do a good job should not have the benefit of getting more customers to treat badly.
